Benched: On the sidelines, suffering an injury, breaking the rules, watching others play, sitting out

At risk and special needs students face being “benched” in the classroom every day. These are students who struggle to maintain their educational focus and self-esteem while facing daily challenges, be they social, mental, financial or personal.  In fact, all students occasionally sit on the sidelines of their education.

Designed to reflect your school’s unique needs and challenges, the Benched Players use theater and improvisational techniques to challenge your student’s thinking, unleash their creativity, and build self-confidence and respect for others as they develop critical thinking skills that will aid them in their educational careers.

As Professional Arts Educators and Performers, we know that theater and improvisation teach:

  • Critical Thinking

  • Situational Analysis

  • Emotional Control & Awareness

  • Body Awareness

  • Relaxation techniques

  • And more…

Text Box: How it works:

A Benched Players representative will visit your school for a brief needs assessment with the participating classrooms.

Selected topics are incorporated into a series of classroom workshops.

A professional actor/arts-educator guides the workshops, using interactive vignettes, scenes, and non-judgmental, non-threatening improvisation games to unlock student creativity, exercise critical thinking skills and open new pathways for learning.
